Managing diabetes at school is most effective when there is a partnership among students, parents, school nurse, health care providers, teachers, counselors, coaches, transportation, food service employees, and administrators. The school nurse provides the health expertise and coordination needed to ensure cooperation from all partners in assisting the student toward self-management of diabetes.
There are two types of Diabetes, Type 1 and 2.
In type 1 diabetes, the body can no longer make any insulin. Insulin is a
hormone your body needs to use glucose. Glucose is a sugar your body uses to
give you energy. People with type 1 diabetes inject insulin every day in order
to live. At this time, type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented.
In type 2 diabetes, the body makes insulin. But, it may not make enough, the
insulin it makes may not work well, or both.
Type 2 diabetes may be prevented or delayed for many years.
If your student has Type 1 Diabetes, please meet with the school nurse prior to your child starting school or as soon as a diagnosis is made. We will work with you and your child's doctors to develop a plan for your student's care at school. Please go to the Forms for Diabetic Students tab to print commonly required forms.
We also want to know if your student has or has been identified as at risk for Type 2 Diabetes. We can support your student's efforts to address risk factors.
